Welcome to the Waikouaiti Museum Home Page.
The Museum Building The top photo is the current Waikouaiti Museum building. Once it housed the Bank of New Zealand and its Manager and family. The BNZ was very important in earlier times, especially as a repository for the newly found gold from the Central Otago Goldfields. Waikouaiti was on the main track to the Pigroot, and provided services and accommodation for goldseekers and traders, especially those landing on the beach at the foot of Beach Street.
Bank of New Zealand logo on the window.
Opening hours The Museum is open from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and 10 to 4pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Public Holidays. The Museum committee will review opening times for the winter.
General rules The Museum is staffed by volunteers who act as custodians, so regretfully we must decline requests to assist with research "on the spot." It is possible to make arrangements for a committee member to research family histories, etc. This will involve an hourly fee of $20.
Without prior permission, no photographs or videos can be taken or made of the interior or exhibits. This includes cellphones and webcams used by laptops.
Request for assisted research, photographs or photocopies. Black and white photographs are available at the counter for a range of subjects. Currently these are priced at $12 per photograph. Photographs not already printed can be ordered for most items and these are $15 each (plus postage). Photocopies of material may be made for customers at a cost of twenty cents a page plus a fee for labour, which is currently set at a minimum of $5 (15 minutes) and a maximum of $20 for one hour (or a maximum time as otherwise agreed at $20 per hour). All money raised will be used to further the interests of the Waikouaiti Museum.
Request to take photographs
The Waikouaiti Museum asserts its rights of copyright and intellectual ownership over all materials in its possession. Because some material may not be copied, and because a record is kept of all permission given, a request must be made in advance to the Museum President or Curator as noted on posters in the Museum.
Conditions of permission
The Waikouaiti Museum must be acknowledged in all publication, including notices for sale. The credit must read "Waikouaiti District Museum, Otago, NZ authorisation N" where N is the number given on the permission slip.

Waikouaiti Museum Society Inc. has an active committee and a strong volunteer group who open the museum to the public five times each week. The "Friends Group" enables a wider network to support us in spirit; those who cannot commit their time or who live further afield. We invite you to join "Friends" by pledging $20 per annum to assist with operating costs and ongoing display upgrades. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any form of electronic funds transfer. Please copy and paste this form into your word processor, then print it and send it to our Treasurer at PO Box 49, Waikouaiti.
